Citizenship
We work with schools on projects that promote active citizenship through art and design activities with an additional aim: to develop and embed partnership working practices in order to build the capacity of schools and teachers to work effectively with the cultural and creative sectors and to encourage and enhance the exchange of skills, creativity and cultural knowledge between schools, cultural and creative professionals.
This means that we will work with schools on projects that include an element of CPD for teachers whilst delivering Citizenship projects to young people.
Primarily sessions will use imaginative and interesting activities that encourage and stimulate i) critical thinking skills of discussion and enquiry to provide a sound basis for class discussions ii) participation and responsible action iii) project work and wider activities in school and the local community.
For example: The stimulus activity could consist of a series of museum or gallery-based arts education sessions delivered by artist practitioners developed around one of the Museum’s collections.
Focus will be on providing development opportunities for the exchange of skills, experience, practise and knowledge between co-participants: pupils, teachers and creative practitioners
Young people will be encouraged to:
- contribute to group discussions and debate
- empathise with the views and experiences of others
Teachers will acquire new skills that:
- enhance creativity and creative teaching
- encourage reflective practice
- encourage lifelong learning
- awareness of development needs of pupils and the working practices of schools
